Microsuction ear wax removal is the process of removing ear wax using a fine, steel wand that fits a suction pipe. The audiologist performs the procedure while examining the ear through a binaural microscope to get a clear view of the ear canal. The process only takes a few minutes, and most patients do not report discomfort during the procedure.

It is an effective and safe way to remove ear wax from the ear canal. However, as with all medical procedures, there is a chance of some side effects.

Though rare, the most commonly reported side effects are:

  • Dizziness
  • Noise damage
  • Ear trauma
  • Infection

Dizziness

There have been some reported cases of people experiencing minor dizziness during or after the procedure. It could also manifest in feeling faint or a sense of vertigo.

The cause of this temporary feeling is that the microsuction ear wax removal causes the ear canal’s inner temperature to go down. The side effect should pass within a few minutes of completing the procedure.

Noise damage

There is some noise that comes from the equipment used during this type of ear wax removal. Used so close to the ear, it may sound quite loud to some people. In a handful of cases, this has been reported to cause temporary hearing loss known as a temporary threshold shift.

This occurs when tiny muscles contract to protect the eardrum. It is extremely rare but it has been reported.

Ear trauma

As the process involves inserting a tube into the ear canal, there is a slight risk of some minor trauma in the ear canal or eardrum. It usually occurs when the recipient moves suddenly.

Infection

Again, this is extremely rare, but infection is a risk with any procedure you undergo. The tools used during microsuction are single-use and sterile, so the risk of infection is extremely remote.

In the unlikely event that you do experience an infection, there are very effective treatments that will clear it up quickly.
